AutomaticProfessional Mechanical Tunas
The Original Tuna (1975)
Seiko's first "Tuna" grew out of a letter from a saturation diver who reported that existing watches failed below 300m. After about seven years of development and more than 20 patents, Seiko launched the 6159-7010 Professional Diver's 600m in 1975: the world's first diver's watch with a titanium case and the first Seiko rated to 600m.
A one-piece (monocoque) titanium inner case was sealed with a new L-shaped gasket that keeps helium out rather than venting it, and a black ceramic-coated titanium shroud of about 50mm protected case and bezel. That shroud gave the family its collector nickname, the "tuna can". Inside sat the 6159B, a 36,000 vph Hi-Beat automatic. Production ended around 1978, when quartz took over the line.

Seiko has used the mechanical Tuna for its biggest anniversaries. The 2000 SBDX005 marked the Tuna's 25th year as a 1,000-piece, 600m homage to the 6159-7010, and was the first Tuna with the 8L35. The 2015 SBDX016 "Gold Ocean" (700 pieces) celebrated 50 years of Seiko divers with the first cermet shroud.
2019 brought two 1,000-piece Mobile Suit Gundam 40th-anniversary Zaku editions. The 2020 SLA041/SBDX035 (1,100 pieces) re-created the 1975 original for the diver's 55th anniversary, now rated to 1000m with a ceramic shroud and Ever-Brilliant Steel bezel.

Emperor Tuna - Marinemaster Professional 1000m (2009-2020)
After three decades of quartz Tunas, Seiko brought a mechanical movement back to its 1000m saturation diver in 2009 with the Japan-only SBDX011. These Marinemaster Professional models combine a black hard-coated titanium monocoque case with a zirconia ceramic shroud (52.4mm, about 17.2mm thick) and the 8L35, a 28,800 vph, 50-hour automatic derived from Grand Seiko's 9S55 and assembled at the Shizukuishi Watch Studio.
The 2015 SBDX013/SBDX014 refresh brought a new dial and an arrow hour hand, and the rose-gold-accented SBDX014 became the first mechanical Tuna sold outside Japan. The 2020 SLA042/SBDX038 added an Ever-Brilliant Steel bezel and closed the regular-production run.

Spring DriveSpring Drive Tunas
Spring Drive Tunas (2013-2015)
In 2013 Seiko put its Spring Drive glide-motion movement into the Tuna case for the first time with the 300-piece SBDB008 "Golden Spring Drive Tuna". The 5R65 caliber offers 72 hours of reserve, a power-reserve indicator and +/-15 seconds per month accuracy, housed in a 50 x 16.2mm titanium case with a DLC-coated titanium shroud rated to 600m.
Unlike the monocoque 8L35 and quartz Tunas, these use a screw-down caseback. A non-limited all-black SBDB009 followed, with the "X"-crown SBDB013 as its 2015 North American counterpart.

QuartzProfessional Quartz Tunas
Vintage Quartz Tunas (1978-2006)
Three years after the 6159, Seiko launched the 7549 "Golden Tuna" in 1978, the world's first quartz professional saturation diver: a 600m titanium monocoque coated in gold titanium nitride. A cheaper 47mm steel 7549-7010 "Tuna Can" was rated to 300m and used a conventional screw-in caseback.
In 1986 the new high-torque 7C46 caliber arrived in the 7C46-7009 (SSBS018), the first diver's watch with a solid zirconia ceramic shroud and the first 1000m Tuna. A steel 300m quartz Tuna (SBBN007) returned in 1991, and the 7C46-7008 kept the Golden Tuna going until about 2006.

1000m Professional Quartz Tunas (2005-2021)
From 2005 the 1000m quartz Tuna went black. The SBBN011 "Darth Tuna" put the 7C46 in a 49.4mm black-coated titanium monocoque under a ceramic shroud, with a flat sapphire crystal. Successive generations followed: the SBBN013 Marinemaster in 2009, the SBBN025 in 2015 and the SBBN047/S23631 Prospex in 2020.
Japan-only limited editions came in white, blue and cermet. Anniversary re-creations honoured the 1978 Golden Tuna (SBBN040/S23626, 1,978 pieces, 2018) and the 1986 1000m quartz diver (SBBN051/S23635, 1,200 pieces, 2021). Since 2020 the line has also been sold outside Japan under S236xx references.

300m Quartz Tunas (2008-2021)
The everyday quartz Tuna is a 47.7mm stainless-steel watch with a shroud and a screw-in caseback, rated to 300m rather than 1000m. It uses the same 7C46 quartz caliber, with about five years of battery life.
The SBBN015 (black insert) and SBBN017 (steel insert) generation was replaced in 2015 by the SBBN031/033/035 with Monster-style hands and a crown at 4. The 2020 SBBN045/S23629 restored the classic Tuna hands and moved the dial from "Marinemaster" to Prospex branding. Japan-only specials include the Golgo 13 (500 pieces, 2012) and the PADI SBBN039 (700 pieces, 2017).

Seiko's only Kinetic Tunas launched at Baselworld 2014, when Prospex first went global. A 47.5mm steel case carries a shroud that is skeletonised for the first time, screwed over the inner case and exposing it.
Inside is the self-charging 5M85 Kinetic GMT caliber with roughly six months of reserve and a push-button reserve indicator. The family was the bracelet SUN019, the strap SUN021 and SUN023, and the 2016 PADI Special Edition SUN065, all rated to 200m.

Baby Tuna First Generation "Superior" (2011-2013)
Seiko's first shrouded 4R divers appeared in Asia in late 2011. Three numbered limited editions led the launch, SRP233, SRP234 and SRP236 at 1,300 pieces each, and the regular SRP227, SRP229 and SRP231 followed in early 2012.
They used the then-new hand-winding, hacking 4R36 in a 44mm case under a removable polyurethane shroud (about 47-48mm overall). Collectors nicknamed them "Baby Tuna" or "Sardine". Later variants included the Korea-market orange SRP251, a Thailand-limited SRP407 and the blue SRP453, which marked the 2013 centenary of Seiko watchmaking.

In 2020 SRP637 and SRP639 were re-referenced as SRPE85 and SRPE87 with revised caseback text, and Japan got its first official Baby Tunas as the online-exclusive SBDY053 "Ice Frost" and SBDY055. The Thailand-only SRP727 also used this case.

SolarSolar Tunas
Japan-Market Solar Tunas & Collaborations (2016-2019)
Before the global launch, Seiko Japan introduced solar Tunas in 2016. These 45.9mm SBDN models ran on the V147 caliber, sold below the quartz SBBN and were issued in limited runs. Many were collaborations with Japanese select shops and labels such as LOWERCASE, United Arrows, BEAMS and ESTNATION; in the US the partner was Freemans Sporting Club.
A smaller 42.7mm STBR case followed in 2017-2018, used mostly for LOWERCASE-designed retailer specials, and the later SBDJ collaborations moved to the V157 caliber. These small-batch Japanese editions are thinly documented; details are being confirmed.

The launch trio was the SNE497, the SNE498 tribute to the 1978 Golden Tuna and the SNE499 PADI edition. The line grew through the Save the Ocean SNE518, the "Street Series" from late 2018 and US exclusives, then the Black Series SNE577 (5,000 pieces, 2021) and China-only limited editions.
