In 1982 Seiko launched the H558 "Hybrid Diver's 150m", the world's first analogue-digital diver with an alarm and chronograph. A tilted LCD below 12 o'clock sits under three analogue hands, all inside a stainless steel case of about 45mm wrapped in a polyurethane shroud. Japan sold it as the H558-5000 and export markets as the H558-5009, and a rarer orange-dial H558-500A was also made.
Seiko proved the watch on the Japanese Antarctic wintering party of 1984-86 and the 1988 Japan-China-Nepal Everest expedition. It became a film icon on Arnold Schwarzenegger's wrist in Commando (1985) and Predator (1987), which gave it the collector nickname "Arnie", and on Roger Moore's in A View to a Kill (1985). Production ended around 1990.
In the mid-1980s Seiko moved the Arnie's functions to the cheaper H601 ana-digi module. The H601-5480 kept the shrouded diver look but flipped the LCD to the other end of the dial, earning it the nickname "Upside Down Arnie". Plastic replaced several metal parts.
The smaller H556-5029 "Baby Arnie" is an earlier-style ana-digi sports diver without a shroud. Neither appears in Seiko's official diver lineage, and no other ana-digi diver followed in Seiko's catalogue until the Arnie returned as a solar Prospex in 2019.
At Baselworld 2019 Seiko surprised collectors by bringing the Arnie back as a Prospex diver. The new solar caliber H851 replaced the original's battery with a light-charged cell of about six months' reserve, while the LCD at 12 o'clock still handles the alarm, the stopwatch and a second time zone. The case grew to 47.8mm with a black plastic shroud, and water resistance rose from 150m to 200m.
Three colourways went on sale in autumn 2019: the black SNJ025, the PADI "Pepsi" SNJ027 and the black-and-gold SNJ028, sold only online (in Japan the SBEQ001, SBEQ003 and SBEQ005). The "Tropical Lagoon" SNJ039 of late 2022 was the last new reference on this case and caliber.
In spring 2020 Seiko put the Arnie into its Prospex Street Series, a range of tool divers in military-style colours. The H851 hybrid came in two versions: SNJ029 "Desert" with a khaki bezel and strap, and SNJ031 "Jungle" in olive drab with red crowns. Both have a black hard-coated case and vintage-tone lume.
In Japan they were the SBEQ007 and SBEQ009, released together with the Urban Safari Tunas (SRPE29/SRPE31, in the Tuna guide). Collectors quickly nicknamed them "Safarnies".
For the hybrid diver's 40th anniversary in 2022 Seiko redesigned the Arnie around a new solar caliber, the H855. The LCD moved to 6 o'clock and grew larger, and the movement added a pressure-sensor depth gauge to 80m, a log of 100 dives and a rapid-ascent warning. The case shrank slightly to 46.9mm, still rated to 200m, and the crowns and pushers were rearranged.
Three references appeared: the steel SNJ033 on a bracelet, the PADI SNJ035 with a globe-pattern dial, and the all-black SNJ037, limited to 4,000 pieces (300 of them in Japan as SBEQ011). No new Arnie reference has appeared since.
