About the Alpinist: The Alpinist is Seiko's mountain watch — the brand's first sports watch, created in 1959 for Japanese climbers. Where the Turtle, Sumo, Samurai and Shogun are divers, the Alpinist is a field watch: compact, legible, and built around its signature features — cathedral hands, a cyclops-magnified date, and an internal compass ring turned by a second crown at 4 o'clock. Across more than six decades it has moved from the Laurel and Champion lines to a JDM cult classic (the SARB017) to a full Prospex collection with GMT and limited editions worldwide.

Reference Note: JDM (Japan Domestic Market) references are listed where found, allowing you to identify both global and regional model variants. From 2026 Seiko began issuing some models under a new HBC reference prefix, which is shown alongside the earlier SPB/SBDC/SBEJ references where applicable.

Original Alpinist (1959-1964)

The Alpinist story begins in December 1959 with the Laurel Alpinist — Seiko's first sports watch, built for the yama-otoko ("mountain men") of post-war Japan, a generation of climbers and hikers taking to the Japanese Alps. Some sources date the launch to 1961; most, including Seiko itself, give 1959.

The original was a compact, roughly 35mm steel watch with a hand-wound 17-jewel Seikosha movement, a screw-down caseback to keep out dust and moisture, an unusually generous amount of luminous paint, and a leather Bund-style cuff strap that protected the wrist from the cold metal case. It is the only Alpinist to carry the Laurel name, which Seiko otherwise reserved for dress watches.

In 1963 the Alpinist moved to the Champion line as the Champion 850 Alpinist, powered by the caliber 850 and identifiable by its lighter centre dial and applied square hour markers. The name then went quiet in the mid-1960s and stayed dormant for three decades. Vintage examples in good original condition are rare and highly sought after.

Red Alpinist (1995)

After thirty years away, the Alpinist returned in 1995 as a Japan and Southeast Asia market model — and this is the generation that defined the look collectors know today. The dress-watch styling of the 1960s gave way to cathedral hands, a second crown at 4 o'clock operating an internal rotating compass ring, and a date window under a cyclops magnifier. The collector nickname "Red Alpinist" comes from the word Alpinist printed in red on the dial.

The roughly 38mm steel case carries 200m water resistance with a screw-down crown, and inside sits the 4S15 automatic (25 jewels, 28,800 vph, hacking and hand-winding) — a higher-grade movement than the 6R15 that would follow. Only three references were made and production was short-lived, which is why clean examples, especially the green SCVF009, now command strong prices.

Alpinist Quartz GMT (2002-2003)

In the early 2000s Seiko took the Alpinist in an unexpected direction: a titanium quartz GMT with a perpetual calendar. These models use the 8F56 high-accuracy quartz caliber, thermo-compensated for exceptional precision, with a calendar that needs no correction until 2100 and a battery life of up to ten years. The 38.5mm titanium case keeps the inner compass ring, with 100m water resistance.

Three standard references were produced alongside one of the rarest Alpinists of all — the SBCJ023 "SSASS", a 500-piece teal-dial edition made for Seven Summits Actions for Sustainable Society, the foundation of Japanese mountaineer Ken Noguchi, known for his Everest and Mount Fuji clean-up expeditions.

SARB Alpinist (2006-2019)

In November 2006 the Alpinist returned to mechanical form with the SARB013, SARB015 and SARB017 — the trio that turned the Alpinist into a global cult watch. Officially a Japanese domestic market line, they reached enthusiasts worldwide through grey-market dealers, and the green-dialled SARB017 became one of the most recommended watches of its era.

The compact steel case (about 38mm, 39.5mm including crowns) keeps the 4 o'clock compass crown and cathedral hands under a sapphire crystal, with 200m water resistance. Unlike the Red Alpinist before it and the Prospex models after, the date window has no cyclops magnifier. Power comes from the 6R15 automatic (23 jewels, 21,600 vph, 50-hour power reserve, hacking and hand-winding). The trio ran for over a decade before being discontinued around 2017-2018.

In July 2009 Seiko also released a Japan-only trio in a slimmer, SKX-style case with an external bidirectional compass bezel, including the all-black SARB063 limited edition tied to photographer Takeshi Mizukoshi. The 6R15 era closed in 2019 with the SPB089, a blue-dialled U.S. limited edition marking the Alpinist's 60th anniversary.

Prospex Alpinist (2020-2025)

Announced at the end of 2019, the Alpinist joined the Prospex family for 2020. The word Alpinist disappeared from the dial in favour of the Prospex "X", and the case grew to 39.5mm x 13.2mm (46.4mm lug-to-lug) with an exhibition caseback. The 6R35 automatic replaces the 6R15, extending the power reserve to 70 hours. The 4 o'clock compass crown, cyclops date, cathedral hands and 200m water resistance all carry over.

The launch four — SPB117, SPB119, SPB121 and SPB123 — were joined by a steady stream of regional limited editions: an annual European exclusive (SPB199, SPB201, SPB355, SPB531), Thailand's "Save the Forest" conservation editions, an Australasian red dial, a Philippine exclusive, a Thong Sia regional edition, and the worldwide Black Series. This case is the base for most modern Alpinist limited editions.

Baby Alpinist (2020-2021)

Alongside the main Prospex range, Seiko introduced a smaller, simpler Alpinist in 2020. Collectors quickly nicknamed it the "Baby Alpinist". The 38mm case drops the inner compass ring, the 4 o'clock crown and the cyclops magnifier, leaving a clean three-hand field watch whose only instantly recognisable Alpinist feature is the cathedral handset.

The movement is the same 6R35 (70-hour power reserve), with sapphire crystal, exhibition caseback and 200m water resistance. Three dials were offered at launch, each with its own strap or bracelet pairing, followed in 2021 by two field-style variants on nylon straps.

1959 Alpinist Re-creation & Modern Re-interpretations (2021-2024)

For Seiko's 140th anniversary in 2021, the brand looked back to the very first Alpinist. The SJE085 1959 Re-creation is a faithful remake of the Laurel Alpinist: a 36.6mm x 11.1mm case, glossy black dial with large triangular markers and white inner minute track, Lumibrite, domed sapphire, and a leather strap with removable Bund cuff. It uses the slim 6L35 caliber and adds a date the original never had. It was limited to 1,959 pieces.

The Modern Re-interpretations translate that design into a 38mm x 12.9mm everyday case with the 6R35 movement, the bold triangular markers at 12, 6 and 9, and 200m water resistance. Like the 1959 original, they use a single crown at 3 o'clock with no rotating compass ring — a clean break from the 4 o'clock crown of the Red, SARB and Prospex Alpinists. The launch trio (SPB241, SPB243, SPB245) was followed by the 140th anniversary "Ginza" limited edition, the 2022 "Deep Lake" and "Forest Brown" models, and regional editions.

Alpinist Mechanical GMT (2023-Present)

Twenty years after the quartz GMT, the Alpinist gained a mechanical GMT in 2023. The 6R54 automatic adds a 24-hour hand that can be set independently in one-hour jumps, with a 72-hour power reserve. The 39.5mm x 13.6mm case (46.4mm lug-to-lug) adds a fixed 24-hour bezel while keeping the 4 o'clock crown and inner compass ring, with domed sapphire and 200m water resistance.

Japan launched with the green-and-gold SBEJ005 in 2023, while the rest of the world received the blue SPB377 and black SPB379. In 2026 the green finally went global as the HBC007 — one of the first references under Seiko's new HBC numbering — and the blue and black reached Japan as the core-shop-exclusive HBC008J and HBC009J.

Alpinist 6R55 Generation (2025-Present)

In November 2025 the core Alpinist range was refreshed for the first time in over five years. The 6R55 caliber replaces the 6R35, with a 72-hour power reserve and improved finishing, including a gold-tone rotor with Tokyo stripes. The case stays at 39.5mm but slims to 12.7mm, with a super-hard coating for scratch resistance, sapphire with date magnifier, screw-down crown and 200m water resistance. The word Alpinist returns to the dial in script beneath the Seiko logo — absent since the SARB era — alongside "Automatic 3 Days" text.

The launch three are teal, black and green; in Japan they are sold as the SBDC207, SBDC209 and SBDC211 through Seiko's core shops. In October 2026 the 145th anniversary "Edo Purple" HBC006 joined the line.
