The Seiko Sumo was introduced in 2007 as part of Seiko's Prospex line of professional divers, earning its nickname from the broad-shouldered case design that recalls the silhouette of a sumo wrestler.
First-generation models use a 45mm stainless steel case with Hardlex mineral crystal, screw-down crown at 4 o'clock, and 200m water resistance. They are powered by the 6R15 automatic caliber, an in-house movement with hacking, hand-winding, 23 jewels, and a 50-hour power reserve operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour.
This generation is distinguished by the absence of the Prospex "X" logo on the dial, a feature exclusive to the original run before Seiko consolidated its diver line under the Prospex banner. Gen 1 is also the only generation to feature a Seiko-signed crown. Some Gen 1 references carry "SCUBA" text on the dial; these "Scuba dials" are today significantly more sought-after by collectors than the later "X dials". Three standard references launched in black, blue, and orange, followed by limited-edition variants in yellow, green, and grey, several of which received sapphire crystals.
The second generation, beginning in 2015, is mechanically identical to the first: same 45mm case, Hardlex crystal, 6R15 movement, 50-hour reserve, 200m WR. The only visible change is the addition of the Prospex "X" logo on the dial, marking the Sumo's formal inclusion in Seiko's professional sports line and the easiest way to tell the two eras apart.
This generation also expanded the catalog significantly with limited and regional editions, including the 50th Anniversary Sumas, the PADI partnership, a Pepsi-bezel variant, the Blue Coral and Emerald Green JDM releases, and the first Thailand Zimbe Sumo.
The third generation, launched in 2019, brings two key upgrades: sapphire replaces Hardlex across the line, and the 6R15 is succeeded by the 6R35, same architecture but with a 70-hour reserve (up from 50) and 24 jewels. Case, water resistance, and crown layout carry over unchanged.
Visual changes from Gen 2 include a redesigned bezel insert font, a revised bezel triangle (shape and size), and updated hand design.
Core references include the Black and Green Sunburst ("Hulk"), the Black Ninja Black Series, the US-exclusive Ice Diver trio, and a long run of regional LEs: Japan Blue, Ginza, Deep Blue, PADI Pepsi, Hawksbill Turtle, Zimbe No.15, Ion Green, and Phi Ta Khon.
Early vs. late production: Early 3rd gen units have a white-framed date window and no lume pip at 3 o'clock. Around 2022, Seiko silently updated production across the line, removing the frame and adding a lume pip at 3 to maintain ISO 6425 compliance. Reference numbers were not changed. Limited editions that had already sold out are unaffected.
The fourth generation, the "King Sumo", launched in 2022 with the most substantial upgrade since the 2007 original. The aluminium bezel is replaced with ceramic, case finishing is refined, and the steel exterior gains Seiko's Super Hard Coating for improved scratch resistance. The 6R35 movement, 45mm case, sapphire crystal, and 200m WR all carry over from the third generation.
Launch references include blue and grey gradient dials plus a PADI model, followed by a wide run of regional LEs: Whale Asia, Silfra Iceland, Muay Thai, Whitsundays, Noosa, Philippine Eagle, Sunrise of Eastern Coast, Black Series Night Vision, and the 2025 Asia-Pacific Wonders of Nature trio.
